In the process of using wheel spacers, studs break-off and thread off occur occasionally. People always blame the poor quality of the studs. Because it related to the driving safety, people always can not accept and forgive such mistakes. But in fact, the studs break-off is not only because of “poor studs quality”. First, The studs quality problems. If there is no strict quality control, any error in the production will cause bolt substandard. Raw materials, heat treatment, surface finish, thread processing, mold design…… which usually can not be seen at the surface.
Second, If the broken lug bolts are tested, we can find that the bolts are qualified to meet or even exceed the standard of the OEM wheel fastener. Why? It mainly relates to installation，wheel hub and lug nuts.
When installing the wheel spacers, the bolts are not tightened according to the recommended torque, or the force direction is not correct during the disassembly. Both acts will result in the bolt being forcibly broken off. Even if it is not broken at that time, the damaged bolts will break off during driving. If the nuts are not tightened or removed according to the correct tightening sequence during installation, some bolts will break due to uneven force.
Installation：unprofessional installation tools; excessive torque; incorrect fastening sequence and method; unclean wheel hub and hub holes before installation; no re-torque after installation.
The aluminum spacer’s machining accuracy is not enough. The error may be too large or the design is unreasonable. When the bolt is installed on the vehicle, the bolt has a vertical or lateral deviation, which causes a lateral extrusion force on the bolt (called shear force, which is most likely to cause bolt break-off), then break-off occurs after driving for a period of time.
The wheel’s machining is not accurate will result in the same situation as above.
Poor quality wheel lug nuts. Lots of persons fix the wheel hub with more personalized after-market lug nuts. Some of the lug nuts are not qualified. Those lug nuts will also break off because of the false force direction. The studs thread will be stripped If the matching deviation is too large.
Some people fix the wheel with an impact wrench when the thread of wheel nuts and spacer studs is not aligned. It will result in thread damage, uneven studs stress, and easier to break off
The wheel hub was impacted by a strong external force, which led to breaking off after driving for a period of time.
So “poor studs quality” is not the only cause leads to studs break-off. Many cases of studs break-off are caused by wrong installation and use. The suppliers need to provide wheel spacers with higher quality studs. More important, customers need professional installation to avoid studs break-off.
